US Civil War

The American Civil War (1861–1865), in the United States often referred to as simply the Civil War and sometimes called the "War Between the States", was a civil war fought over the secession of the Confederate States. The Dred Scott Decision (1857) handed down by Chief Justice Roger Taney, also helped to ignite it.

Eleven southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America ("the Confederacy"); the other 25 states supported the federal government ("the Union"). After four years of warfare, mostly within the Southern states, the Confederacy surrendered and slavery was abolished everywhere in the nation. [1][2]

Special Notes

  • Do not create categories with the name containing quote marks (i.e. "Star" Brigade, "Star" should be Star), or the & character (i.e. Support & Supply should be Support and Supply). The characters are not supported in category names and will cause failures when trying to edit the category after it is created.
  • A lot of regiments and their abbreviations look the same. Look carefully through the listing before choosing a regiment.
Currently battalion and company sized units are not entered.
  • If a unit you wish to connect to has special notes for a company or battalion that is an integral part of a larger unit it may be added as a free space page. Separate command units smaller than regimental size may be created as categories.
There are over ?? (a lot) of subcategory pages for the US Civil War.
