Virginia Officially the Commonwealth of Virginia. On 25 June 1788, Virginia was the 10th state to ratify the Constitution. Nearly a century later (four score...), Virginia voted to secede from the United States on April 17, 1861, joining the Confederacy on April 24. which chose Richmond as its capital. Following the War Between the States, Virginia was formally restored to the United States in 1870. Its nickname is the "Old Dominion" due to its status as a former dominion of the English Crown. Virginia is the 35th largest by area and 12th largest state by population. Richmond is the state capital.
