Wetnurses
A wet nurse breastfeeds infants who are not fed by their own mothers. Before the advent of infant formula, an infant who could not be breastfed would very likely die from inadequate nutrition. In Catholic nations, infants surrendered soon after their birth were assigned to wet nurses in the community by the Catholic Church. These foundlings would often grow up in the households of their wet nurses, and take their wetnurse or her husband's surname as their own in adulthood.
