Formed as Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps, in 1917 it became the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). The WAAC was divided into four sections: cookery; mechanical; clerical and miscellaneous. Most of the women stayed on the Home Front, with about 9,000 serving in France.
