Thomas Road Tom was born abt 1725, in Orange county, North Carolina to parents Robert Cate and Elizabeth Wyatt. Thomas became a road surveyor. Due to his surveying, he acquired the label Thomas Road Tom Cate. This name is also found in the references. In 1754 Thomas received land in Orange, North Carolina. [1]

WILL OF Robert CATE, Jr. Probated March WILL OF Robert CATE, Jr. Probated March of 1767 He left his wife, Elizabeth , half of his estate. He left to his son, Richard, the plantation where he lived at his death after the death of his Mother. To his daughter, Sarah, he left the bed she slept on. His Granddaughter Ann , daughter of his son Thomas, was left an equal part of his estate as received by his sons and daughters. His sons, Thomas and Joseph were named executors. He did not mention his other sons, Robert III, John, or Charles. Witnessed by: Wm. Smith, Elizabeth Cate, and Robert Cate, Sr.

Thomas Road Tom served in the American Revolution 1775-1783 for Orange Co., North Carolina Name was misspelled "Keats", date Aug 1781 on the roster: [3] [4]

In 1780 Thomas Road Tom was in Caswell County, North Carolina. A Survey petition listed Thomas' name and sent to the "House of Burgesses", 26 Oct 1779, from inhabitants of Caswell Co. The citizens were requesting that an equal division be made of the county, due to length of forty miles in length and 20 mile width. (General Assembly; Box: Oct - Nov 1779 [North Carolina State Archives]; Call Number: Folder: Petitions; P 3; Family Number: 36.) [5] His first wife died.

1800 US Fed Census shows Thomas Road Tom in Newberry District, South Carolina.[6]

Marriage 2
Thomas married secondly in 1808 to Yourith/Urith McMillian. US Federal census for 1810 reflects this. [7] Thomas was living in Hillsborough, Orange, North Carolina as per U S census. On 29 NOV 1802 (Age: 77) he made a Deed of Gift [8], filed in Orange, North Carolina Newberry District under Deed of Gift, D74 to a daughter and a son named Thomas..

Thomas Road Tom Cate's will was probated in Newberry Dist Court on 9 Jan 1818. 1st settlement made to the family on 13 Dec 1819, Newbery, South Carolina.
