Biography

OBITUARY: Lewis Duane "Chumpy" Cates, 83, of Canadian passed away Thursday June 14th in Canadian, TX.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday June 18th at the Church of Christ in Canadian at 2PM with Donald Hill officiating and Graveside services Tuesday June 19th in Crowell, TX at 11AM. Interment will be at Crowell Cemetery in Crowell, TX. with Ron Fox officiating.

Chumpy was born October 9th, 1934 to James Monroe Cates and Lillian Hopkins in Thalia, TX. Chumpy was the oldest of six children. He was raised on the family farm in Thalia and attended Crowell ISD where he graduated from Crowell High School in 1953. After graduation he worked on several ranches and farmed before serving in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959 and served in the Army Reserves until 1965.

He married Hazel LaRue Diggs on March 16, 1962 in Crowell, TX and had three children.

Chumpy was very active in law enforcement for over fifty years. Ford County deputy sheriff from October 1959 to March 1964. Brand inspector for the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association in Crowell, TX. from 1964 to 1967 and moved to Canadian and served from 1967 until 2004. He was also a commissioned investigator for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation from 1967 until 2004, Deputy for Wheeler County from 2004 to 2010, Reserve Deputy for Roger Mills County from 2004 to 2015, Lifetime member of the 5 state peace officers, Lifetime member of the Panhandle Peace Officers, United Peace Officer of Boy's Ranch, Lifetime Member of the Southwest Oklahoma Peace Officers and a Special Texas Ranger for 40 Years, 6 months, and 16 days.

Chumpy was a member of the Canadian Roping Club from 1968 to 1978 were he served as President. A member of the Canadian Rodeo Club from 1978 to 1988 were he served as President. He was a member of the American Legion of the Canadian Post # Z Bach 56 and a member of the VFW since 1960 where he would put out flags every Memorial Day around cemeteries in Hemphill County for over 30 years.

He also enjoyed cooking the Old Timers BBQ in Canadian from 1968 to 2008 and cooked for the Top O Texas Rodeo for 25 years.

Chumpy was honored to be featured in the books Texas Stories by Craig Savoye, Book #19, Hank the Cowdog, The Case of the Midnight Rustler by John R. Erickson and in the magazine Ranch Record summer 2014 edition titled "Yesterday's Cowboy Lawman."

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and Brothers Albert and Jerry.

Chumpy is survived by his daughter, Tracy, his sons Ross and wife Jeanie, Lance and wife Dayla, all of Canadian, Seven Grandchildren Tara Salazar and husband Domingo of Spearman, Chance Temple of Kingston Springs, TN, Jessica Dickinson and husband Bo of Panhandle, Marshal Cates, Ashton Macias and husband Travis all of Canadian, Colton Cates and wife Taryn of Shamrock, Kade Johnson of New York and Four Great Grandkids, Brother Ivan Cates and wife Judy, Sister in Law Perky Cates, Sister in Law Kathy Cates all of Amarillo, Brother JM Cates of Clayton, NM, Sister Peggy Tabor and husband Wylie of Quanah, Many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and dear special friends, Robert "Nacho" Hernandez and Cosme and Monica Velasquez.
