Nancy's spelling is different for child Emsley; spelling middle name as HORTAN.
Nancy signed this particular document with an X; indicating she was illiterate.
However, there are other documents in the file where she signs her name.
The pension file includes a two-page letter from James Cates (father of Nancy) to the Commissioner of Pensions, dated Sept 1869. I am paraphrasing, but the letter is basically urging them to expedite the pension process, that had taken 5 years. It is interesting that the pension was finally approved a few months later, in Dec 1869.
