Biography
William was the son of Alexander and Mary Cates of Estill County, Kentucky, and the brother of Elizabeth, James and Mary (possibly twins), Martha, Franklin, Jacob, John W., and Speed. He was born in Estill County, Kentucky, in 1838. He was the husband of Lucinda (Kelly) Cates, and the father of Isabel, Delia, Susan, George, Sinda, Nannie, and Jefferson. William was a farmer in Madison County, Kentucky. He died in 1896 and is buried in Cates Cemetery, Madison County.
