George was the son of William and Lucinda (Kelly) Cates of Madison County, Kentucky, and the brother of Isabel, Cordelia, Susan, Jefferson, Sinda, and Nannie. He married three times. His first wife was Alice Moody, and they were the parents of William and John. She died when John was a baby. In 1898, he married Annie Hendricks, who was the mother of George and Alex. His third wife was Nannie Williams, who was the mother of Cindy Belle, Nora, Alice, Mary, Lewis, and Elizabeth. George died when Elizabeth was a baby. He is possibly buried in Cates Cemetery in Madison County, though there is no tombstone for him there.
