Obituary
OBITUARY “DISCOVERER” OF SIR HENRY WOOD Dr. George Clark Cathcart, who "discovered” Sir Henry Wood as a boy of 11 and financed the first Henry Wood promenade concert, died in his sleep at Westgate-on- Sea (Kent) on Thursday night, aged 90. Dr. Cathcart, who was born in Edinburgh, was in his day one of the foremost experts on the larynx in Britain, and it was his knowledge of the effect singing could have on the throat that made him impose a condition when he put up £2,000 for the first promenade concert. It was that the French or low pitch should be introduced. The higher pitch then in vogue in Britain was, he said, bad for singers. In addition to the money he put up—and lost—he purchased wind instruments from abroad for the orchestra.:: [10]
