Biography

Major Thomas Catlett "of Caroline" was the second son of Col. John Catlett and Elizabeth Gaines. He married Martha ____, whose surname, "after diligent search," remains unknown. [1]

Note: Multiple internet sites show this Thomas Catlett's wife as Martha Thornton, but none of them cite a primary source.

Thomas was on the vestry of St. Mary's parish; major and sheriff of Essex Co., VA in 1716; patented in 1726 a large body of lands in Spotsylvania Co. on the Rapidan River; patented lands in Caroline Co. in 1730; and served as justice of the peace in Caroline Co., VA in 1732-35 and 1739. [2]

Thomas and Martha's children were: [3]

  2. George Catlett, m. Mary Hampton of Caroline Co. (____-1769), d. 1766
  3. Thomas Catlett, Jr., d. between 1759-1763
  4. James Catlett,
  5. Frank Catlett,[4]
  6. John Catlett, "of King William Co.," m. Mary M. Eggleston, d. 1802

Thomas died in 1739 and his wife Martha was executrix of his estate, which was inventoried on 07 Nov 1739. [5]

Father was 11 years old at his birth?

Biography indicates a different mother than shown...also, if this is the son of the father shown, his birth is incorrect per the father's profile.

There are several Thomas' running around in this family. Perhaps this one is a duplicate of one of the others and attached to the wrong parents? Catlett-559, Catlett-142 are possibilities.

This Thomas Catlett did not marry Ann Gwathmey, that was the Thomas Eggleston Catlett who was the grandson of this Thomas Catlett.

Thanks for flagging it Robin - another profile that I adopted and just haven't gotten 'round to it - will add it to my work list!

This profile needs work as the marriage would indicate he was married at 6 years old.

Catlett-259 and Catlett-51 appear to represent the same person because: same/similar dates, same places, mother's name is the same (merge proposed)
Catlett-51 and Catlett-62 appear to represent the same person because: These look like the same person, but spouse Ann Gwathmey is obviously incorrect, as only Asian cultures allowed child marriages...in those days.

Catlett-51 and Catlett-85 appear to represent the same person because: Though most online sources agree on 1669 as year of birth, some have it as early as 1665 or as late as 1680. Until/unless something definitive turns up, I believe "about" 1669 should be given as DOB in WikiTree.
