Research Notes

Brown-13495 14:27, 8 August 2018 (UTC) Nothing found under Catlin or Cattel in Newington, Kent or Newington, Surrey, or Stoke Newington. FamilySearch, FindMyPast and FreeReg searched. It's hard to tell who is who in baptism records: there were quite a lot of John Catlins born at about the right time in England. John Catlin the immigrant to Barbados and Connecticut is found at [1]. The Catlins of Barbados are probably his siblings and cousins - they may show whether this connection is correct or not.

We don’t know how the Catlins are related to the following, but they most likely are:

  • According to one legend, Sir Robert Catlin was granted a coat of arms, as a honorable testimony of his gallantry at the battle of Agincourt on Oct 25 1415 under Edward the Black Prince. There are two points that prove this legend not quite true: coats of arms were rarely given out before 1500, and the Black Prince died on 8 June 1376, 39 years before the battle of Agincourt.
  • Reginald De Catlyn, a follower of William the Conqueror, is mentioned in Domes Day Book, as having two knight's fees lands in the Count of Kent. It is said the family has been located at Newington, County Kent, England ever since the Norman conquest.
