Biography

James Catt was born before, and christened on, 18 December 1836 in Northiam, Sussex, England [1], the son of William Catt and Winifred Ann Trill and the brother of Henry William Catt, John Catt, Elizabeth (Catt) Ballard, William Catt, Hannah (Catt) Eyles and George Catt.

His parents and 1-year-old James were bounty immigrants, travelling aboard the ship "Amelia Thompson", departing Plymouth, England on 28 March 1838 and arriving at Botany Bay, Port Jackson, Sydney, New South Wales on 1 July 1838 [2][3].

He married Elizabeth (Thomas) Bowerman on 21 July 1857 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia [4] and they were the parents of James Robert Catt, William Henry Catt, Elizabeth Mary (Catt) Marchant. Sadly, Elizabeth died on 22 June 1867 at Pennant Hills, New South Wales, Australia, leaving James with four young children.

James then married Elizabeth Ogden on married 4 January 1869 in Carlingford, New South Wales, Australia [5] and they were the parents of Winifred Ann (Catt) Mobbs, David George Catt, Phoebe (Catt) Winning, Jane Catt, Martha Adelaide Catt, Jordan Edward Catt, Edith (Catt) Joyce and Spencer Ivan Catt.

James died on 24 January 1886 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia [6][7][8].

An old resident of Dundas, named James Catt, died suddenly at 9.30 on Sunday night. He was reclining on a sofa, reading a newspaper, when he breathed heavily once and expired. The deceased has left a widow and nine children comfortably provided for. As Dr. Smith certified that the cause of death was sunstroke, no inquest will be held.

Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, that letters of administration of all and singular the real estate, goods, chattels, credits, and effects of James Catt, late of Field of Mars, in the Colony of New South Wales, farmer, deceased, intestate, who departed this life on the 24th day of January, 1886, may be granted to Elizabeth Catt, of Field of Mars aforesaid, the widow of the said deceased.—Dated at Sydney, this 11th day of February, a,d. 1886.
