News Item

Incident witnessed by Leslie Catt.

Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856 - 1950), Thursday 22 July 1948, page 2 [1] FATALITY AT STEELWORKS Run Over by Engine Incidents leading to the death, of Allan David Leslie, of Bellambi, at the Australian Iron and Steel Works, Port Kembla, on June 27, were told to the, deputy coroner, Mr. W. S. Musgrave, at the Wollongong Court House last Thursday. Leslie was fatally injured when he was run over at the works by a locomotive pushing two trucks filled with ore dust. Leslie Catt, a shunter employed at the Steelworks, said that on the night of June 27, in answer to a whistle from a locomotive, he had showed a green light to enable it to proceed across the road on its way to Cringila. At the time he was in front of the Traffic Office and he then walked down to the road to see that the cutting was clear. He returned to the office and from where he was standing he could see the deceased standing on the front of the leading dust car on the right hand side. "When the train was opposite me." said Catt, "'the deceased appeared to move from one side of the dust car to the other. As he moved across he appeared to lose his balance and fall between the rails. "I ran towards the locomotive at the same time showing a red light from my signal lamp. I was not on the same side as the driver. "As I approached the engine I saw the deceased struck by the undercarriage of the locomotive. I called out to the driver to stop. "The engine stopped and the deceased was under the rear wheels. Later, I saw the deceased removed from beneath the locomotive. His body was considerably mangled and he appeared, to be dead."
