On 12 September 1918, Carew registered for the military draft in Jackson, Breathitt, Kentucky. On his registration card he stated that he was born August 14, 1880, without stating where. He was working as a farmer at Bays, Breathitt County and his nearest relative was Edia Caudill of Bays. He was of medium height, stout build, with blue eyes, and black hair. He told the registrar that he "was not physically sound."[1][2]
Carew Caudill died on March 10, 1921 at the young age of 40 years, 6 months, 26 days. His recorded date of birth was August 14, 1880. He was a farmer; the son of John Caudill, born Letcher; and Margaret Creech, born Breathitt, Ky according to his death certificate No. 4759 (Elliottsville, Breathitt, Ky).[3]
