Biography

Lady Caroline Cavendish was born 22 May 1719, the eldest daughter of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire and his wife Catherine Hoskins.

She married on 05 July 1739, William Ponsonby, 2nd Earl of Bessborough (born 1704, died 11 March 1793).[1]

They had the following nine children (not sure of the order of birth), of whom only three survived to adulthood[2]:

  1. William Brabazon Ponsonby, died young;
  2. Lady Catharine Ponsonby, born 25 October 1742, died 03 September 1789,[3] married 04 May 1763, Aubrey Beauclerk, 5th Duke of St Albans;
  3. William Ponsonby, died young;
  4. John Ponsonby, died young;
  5. Henry Ponsonby, died young;
  6. Lady Charlotte Ponsonby, born 10 December 1747, died 13 May 1822, married 11 July 1770, William Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam,[4]
  7. Caroline Ponsonby, died young;
  8. Sarah Ponsonby; died young;
  9. Frederick Ponsonby, born 24 January 1758,[5], succeeded his father as 3rd Earl of Bessborough 11 March 1793.

She died 20 January 1760 and was buried at All Saints', Derby.[6]
