Claud Thornton Cayley was the son of John Cayley and Clara Louisa Boulton. He was born on 9 June 1854. His birth was registered in the Marylebone district of London in the 3rd quarter of 1854.[1]
Life
He spent much of his early life in Toronto, Ontario. He went into business in England, first as an importer and dealer in engineering machinery and components, then with his own engineering and manufacturing business. Some of his business was for the military - supplying projectiles.
In 1885 a John Williams and a George Inskip were found guilty of breaking into and entering Claud's warehouse.[2]
In 1886 Claud was Managing Director of the Simonds Round Foprging Complany Ltd.[3]
In 1891 Claud and Reuben S Courtman were granted a patent for the manufacture of metal tubes or tubular vessels. It was extended in 1895.[4] He served as Managing Director, and then General Manager, of the Projectile Company Ltd (Reuben Courtman was Works Manager).[5]
Claud was a keen yachtsman. In 1902 he was chosen as Rear-Commodore of the London Yacht Club.[6] He competed, for instance, in the Heligoland Cup Race in 1904[7] and the Cowes to Clyde race, on his yacht Adela, in 1905.[8]
Marriages and Children
On 1 June 1881 he married Esther Mary Bayley, daughter of William Bayley.[9] The marriage was registered at Croydon, Surrey in the 3rd quarter of 1881.[10] They had the following children:
Following his first wife's death in 1926, Claud married Blanche Graham Ford, daughter of John Ford of Ontario, Canada and widow of Arthur Clemow, in May 1927.[9] The marriage was registered in Kensington, London, England in the 2nd quarter of 1927.[15]

Death
Claud died in Kensington, London on 31 July 1928. His death was registered in London in 1928, with his age given as 74.[21] Probate was granted on his estate on 15 September 1928, with his death date recorded as 31 July 1928.[22]
