Edward Cayley was born in 1578. He purchased the original Cayley estates at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire. In 1578-79 his feoffees received from his father the advowson of Thormanby church. He passed away in 1642 and was buried at All Saints, Brompton by Sawdon on 12 December 1642..
At this date the family surname spelling varied between Cayley, Caley and other variants.
