Biography

Scottish flag
William Cayley RN was born in Scotland.
William Cayley RN is a Military Veteran.
Served in the United Kingdom Royal Navy 1911-after 1960
William, age 14, was a naval cadet at the Royal Naval College, Osborn, Isle of Wight. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander.

William Arthur Seton Cayley was the son of Digby Cayley and Beatrice Coddington. He was baptised at Blackburn, Lancashire on 16 November 1896, with his birth date given as 11 September 1896.[1]

The 1911 census lists William as a naval cadet, age 14, at the Royal Naval College, Osborn, Isle of Wight, with his birthplace as Ross, Scotland.[2]

William's marriage to Natalie Maud Grey was registered in the Heywood district of Lancashire in the 2nd quarter of 1937.[3]

Voyages to South Africa

He was a career British naval officer who rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander.[4] The year of his retirement from the British Royal Navy is not known and has been estimated to have been after he was posted to South Africa in 1960.[5]

A passenger list shows that he emigrated to South Africa on 5 Jan 1956 on board the ship Winchester Castle, which departed Southampton, United Kingdom for Cape, South Africa.[6]

An updated passenger list shows that he emigrated to South Africa on 13 Nov 1958 on board the ship Braemar Castle, which departed London, United Kingdom bound for Durban (Port Natal) South Africa. This passenger list shows that he was still a British Naval Officer.[7]

A passenger list shows that he emigrated to South Africa on 24 Nov 1960 on board the ship Edinburgh Castle, which departed United Kingdom for Cape, South Africa.[8]

Each of the above voyages, the manifest of which indicates that his rank was that of a Lt. Cdr., was undertaken when William was still in service to the Royal Navy. Most likely "Emigration" is a category that includes a temporary deployment to port cities in South Africa, as evidenced by the fact that each departure was from a port in England, United Kingdom.

Death

William's death, age 68, was registered at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in the 3rd quarter of 1964.[9][10] Probate was granted on his estate on 21 October 1964, with his death date as 16 August 1964.[11]
