John was the son of John Cayley and Rebecca Newell. He was baptised at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 2 February 1740/1 (transcripts on Familysearch and FindMyPast give the year as 1740 - the image of the parish register on FindMyPast makes it clear it was 1740/1).^[1][2]

He was educated at Beverley School, Marlborough and St John's College, Cambridge, which he entered as a scholar in 1759. He was awarded a LLB degree in 1770.^[3]

He was ordained deacon in 1763 and priest in 1765. From then until his death he was Rector of Terrington, Yorkshire, England. From 1793 he was also priest-in-charge of All Saints, Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire.^[3][4]

John married his third cousin Frances Cayley^[5] at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 28 February 1775.^[6] They had the following children:

• John, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 26 June 1776.^[7]
• Philadelphia Frances, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon on 3 June 1777^[8]

In the latter part of his life John lived at the Low Hall, Brompton by Sawdon.^[9] He died on 4 September 1823.^[3] He was buried at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 12 September 1823.^[10]

Probate was granted on John's estate in 1824, with his residence given as the Low Hall, Brompton by Sawdon.^[11] A transcript of his 1822 will and an 1823 codicil can be found here.
