Simon was the son of William Cayley and Mary Holbech.[1] He was baptised at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire, England on 31 October 1661.[2]
He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, matriculating in 1678 and being awarded a BA degree in 1681-2 and a MA in 1685.[3]
Simon was ordained priest in 1685. He was Vicar of Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire from 1685 to 1692 and was Rector of Ampthill, Bedfordshire, and Rector of Maulden, Bedfordshire at the time of his death.[4]
Simon had at least four children:
Mary, baptised at Ampthill, Bedfordshire on 13 November 1700[5]
Simon, baptised at Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England on 11 July 1703, with his birth date given as 9 July[8]
He died in 1703 (when his last parish appointment ended) as a result of a fall from his horse.[7] He was buried at Ampthill, Bedfordshire on 3 December 1703.[9]
Possible Son John
Foster's Yorkshire Pedigrees says that Simon had a son called John who was a British consul in an unspecified place.[7] This may be a confusion with Simon's son William who was a British consul in the Iberian peninsula.
