James was the son of Richard Cayley and Sibilla Smallwood. He was baptised at Exhall near Coventry, Warwickshire on 16 September 1655.[1]
James matriculated at Lincoln College, Oxford in 1674, age 18, and was awarded a BA from Hart Hall, Oxford in 1677/8.[2]
He passed away after 1682 when his son William was baptised.
