Edward Cayley was born on 15 June 1829 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, and baptised at All Saints, Stamford that year. He was educated at Stamford School and St John's College, Cambridge.
He was ordained deacon in 1855 and priest in 1856. He held a curacy at Fallington, Lincolnshire from 1858-61 and at Brinsley, Nottinghamshire from 1862 to 1867. From 1867 to 1885 he was vicar of South Leverton, Nottinghamshire. In 1888 he moved to London.
He died in London on 5 Dec 1908.
