Biography

George Avery Chadwick was born on 13 December 1839 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph and Susan (Wing) Chadwick. [1][2]

He was enumerated with his parents, siblings and paternal grandmother in the 19 September 1850 census in Sandwich at age 10, attending school.[3] In 1855, the State Census enumeration listed him with his parents and siblings at age 15.[4] Likewise in 1860, he was still with his parents in Sandwich at age 20.[5]

During the Civil War, George enlisted from Plain Township in Bowling Green, Ohio, with Company C, 144th Infantry, in May 1864, and mustered out in August 1864.[6] His cousin Warren L. Chadwick was also listed in Plain Township's muster roll but in a different regiment.[6]

George Chadwick and Sarah A. Noble were married by license in Wood County, Ohio, on 31 December 1868 by Rev. William Irons.[7]

In the 1870 census, dated in August, George and his wife, named as Albina, were enumerated in Center Township in Bowling Green, Ohio. He was a farmer, age 29, born in Massachusetts. Albina was age 27, born in Ohio. They had on child, a son Frank aged 5 months, born in Ohio.[8] They were residing next door to Nathan Noble, a 59 year old farmer from New York, and presumably his wife Sarah A. Noble, age 56, also born in New York. They were probably Sarah's parents.

When they were enumerated for the June 1880 census, George was listed as a "common laborer" aged 39 years. Albina was 37 years, and their only child was Frank, aged 10 years.[9] George died on 30 May 1900 in Wellington Township, Lorain County, Ohio, at age 59 years, 6 months and 13 days of Dropsy. He was a farmer. His parents' names were not recorded.[10]

George and his wife Sarah were buried together in the Greenwood Cemetery in Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio. George died in 1900 and Sarah in 1922.[11]
