Frances Virginia Chaffin, was born in Washington, DC in 1929. [1] She grew up in Woodville, Mississippi however. Frances received her BS degree from Mississippi Southern College in 1951.
Frances was commissioned in August 1951 as an officer in the Women's Army Corps. She attended WAC officer training at Ft Lee, VA that fall.
In 1967, as a lieutenant colonel, Frances was ordered to Vietnam as the fourth (of six) senior WAC advisors to the Vietnamese Women's Armed Forces Corps. She was in Saigon during Tet '68. and returned to the United States in that summer to attend the Army War College.
From 1972-74 LTC Chaffin was the WAC Staff Advisor to US Army Europe.
In 1974, She had married BG Vincent D Gannon, however that marriage was dissolved in 1978. [2]
Her last assignment was as director of evaluation for the Army intelligence school at Ft Huachuca, AZ, and retired in Sierra Vista, Arizona as a colonel in 1977.
Awards and Decorations: Col Gannon received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal [3]
