Biography

Archibald Henderson Chaffin was born in 1803 in North Carolina according to the 1850 census.

From the 1850 census we learn Archibald is a forty seven year old school teacher, married to Jemima and is the father of several children. Also in the home are Elizabeth Chaffin, age 73, presumably his mother.

Note: Elizabeth Chaffin was born in Maryland, according to this census record. All other members of the household were born in North Carolina.

In the 1860 census Archie and family are living in the Smith Grove area of Davie County. He is fifty seven and Jemima is forty eight. We learn that Doctor's middle initials are P.H. and he is now fifteen years old. Parthena L. (Louisa, as we will later learn) is eleven, and there is another child born since 1850, named Sallie S. Chafin. Archibald's mother is no longer living with the family, and has been replaced by Rebecca Estes, whom we may assume is Jemima Jarmine's mother. She is seventy years old. ^[2]

Research Notes:

Nathan, born 1839, is in the 1850 census, but not in he 1860 one. He would certainly not have been old enough to have left home, and therefore the possibility of his death must be considered. He could possible have become indentured to someone. However, there is no evidence one way or the other.

There is an Archibald Chaffin who was in the war of 1812. Could he have been the father of our Archibald?
