Biography

Alexander's parents; Laurance Chalker, 1605 - 1632, born in Cranbrook, Kent, England, and Ellen Frost born ab. 1605 - 1646, in Bakewell, Derbyshire, England.

Alexander Chalker was an early settler of Guilford, CT and was made freeman on 22 May 1648.[1]

He married his first wife, whose name is unknown, at Guilford, Connecticut about 1647. She died after giving birth to a son.

  1. Samuel Chalker[1]

He married (2nd) at Guilford or Saybrook on September 29, 1649 to Kateren (Katherine) Post of Saybrook; daughter of Stephen and Eleanor (Panton) Post. He sold his lands in Guilford between 1652-55 and moved to Saybrook "where he became a prominent inhabitant."

  1. Stephen, who was born September 8, 1650 and died 1711.
  2. Mary who was born April 27, 1653; married Richard Cozens of Block Island on March 7, 1677.
  3. Abram or Abraham was born October 19, 1655.
  4. Kateren or Katherine was born November 8, 1657.
  5. Sarah was born October 19, 1659.
  6. Jane was born March 25, 1662.
  7. Alexander was born February 25, 1666; and died May 25, 1727.

He died before 1673 as his widow Katherine married 23 Sep 1673 to John Hill of Guilford (as his 2nd wife).[3][1]

Katherine died between January 9, 1693/4 and September 18, 1694.[1]

  • The names of Guilford settlers that came to New Haven in the second ship in July 1639 lists Alexander Chalker.[4][5][6]
