Mr. Thomas Chamberlain, who died at a private hospital in Palmerston North on Thursday last, was born at Motueka, Nelson, 67 years ago, and was the second son of Mr John Chamberlain, one of New Zealand's earliest pioneer settlers who came out from England to New Zealand about 75 years ago, and lived there for half a century The late Mr. Thomas Chamberlain married a daughter of Mr. John Haycock, then a runholder in the Marlborough province, the issue from their marriage being nine (eight of whom are now living) — four sons and five daughters— all grown up, married and settled in different parts of the Dominion. Amongst the daughters are Mesdames Mahoney and Ashton, of Wellington, and Mrs. Toon, of Petone. Deceased (says the Manawatu Standard) settled at Longburn about 1877, and lived there till a few' years ago. He was a typical farmer, who by his indomitable energy and perseverance succeeded in farming pursuits, which he relinquished on account of Indifferent health some five years since, his son George carrying on the farm. Mr. Chamberlain was one of a sterling class of men, never shrinking from the execution of his duty, a good neighbour and generally respected. He had done many kind actions in his quiet, unassuming way. Mr. Chamberlain has a sister and brother in Auckland, a brother and sister in Nelson, and a brother in Woodville. His wife predeceased him seven years ago [4]
