Biography

Oliver Chamberlain and his first wife Mary Jones Chamberlain had eleven children (not ten children as one source below stated). She died in 1804. He married as his second wife, Diana Huntington in 1805, but he had no children with Diana.

Oliver is buried in "Group One" of The Plain Cemetery, Perkinsville, Windsor County, Vt., as are both of his wives: 1st Mary (nee Jones) and 2nd Diana (nee Huntington), whose gravestone reads "Dinah". He did not have children with his 2nd wife. Source: The Plain Cemetery Find-a-Grave (see below).

Oliver served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the Connecticut "Light Horse," Capt. Joel Loomis' company, Major Backus' Regiment, from September 16th to October 30th, 1776. (The regiment was dismissed by Washington). He was a hatter by trade.

In September 1761, Oliver Chamberlain of Windsor, Ct., and his mother Hannah (Wyatt) Chamberlin Houghton, widow of Benjamin Chamberlin, of Colchester, deceased, sold a part of Lot 19 in the first of the Sequestered Lands of Colchester. This lot was originally part of the estate of Joseph Chamberlin (= grandfather of Oliver; See Colchester Deeds, Liber 6, P. 40; Liber 7, P. 241). Oliver had a seat in the meeting house in 1761, and his first ten children were baptized there at Windsor.

On 6 August 1767, Oliver Chamberlin, of Windsor, Ct., sold eighteen and one-forth acres in Colchester "land set off to me from the estate of Benjamin Chamberlin." His mother Hannah (Wyatt) Chamberlin Houghton released her right of dower.

Oliver removed to Weathersfield, Vermont about 1781. (= source: David C. Chamberlain, below).

Lewis C. Aldrich/Frank R. Holmes, History of Windsor County, Vermont: History of the Town of Weathersfield, 1891 (see sources below) report as follows:

"Joseph (Chamberlain) had a son Benjamin...who had a son, Oliver, born February 9, 1737, and in 1761 married Mary Jones. This was the Weathersfield settler. He came from Windsor, Conn., to Charlestown, N.H., then a military post, and was a hatter by trade. He had a family of ten children, viz., (1) Wyatt, born December 26, 1763, emigrated to Ohio; (2) Oliver, Jr., born July 16, 1765, married Polly Stoughton; (3) Sally, born December 19, 1766, married Samuel Cook; (4) Levi, died young; (5) Alva, born February 17, 1771, married Abigail Stoughton, resided in Weathersfield; (6) Chauncey; (7) Polly (a nickname for Mary), married John Boynton; (8) Betsey, married John Joslin; (9) Nancy, married John Bisbee; and (10) Amasa, emigrated to Ohio.

Lewis and Holmes' listing, as transcribed by Gary Wysocki, contains two major mistakes, namely 1) that "Amasa" (listed as child #10) "emigrated to Ohio" when, in fact he was child # 4, (b.1768- d.1769) and died in infancy in East Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut; and 2) it was Anson (listed erroneously as child #10, when in fact he was child #11) who went to Ohio.
