Alfred CHAMBERLAIN was born about 1811 in Norfolk, England.
Alfred emigrated from Southampton, England, to Port Adelaide, South Australia, on the Star Queen arriving on the 31st December 1854. He was listed as 35 (DOB~1819), and a carpenter from Middlesex. He was accompanied by his wife, Fanny (25) and son, John (7).[1][2][3]
Alfred and his family settled in Kapunda some time before 1863 as Alfred applied for, and received, a cattle slaughtering licence in 1863 for section 1402, Kapunda. He appears to have started a butchering business in addition to his carpentry.[4][5][6][7]
Alfred, described as a carpenter, bought sub-allotment 19 of allotments 53, 54, 63 and 64 of section 1402 Hundred of Kapunda, County of Light, on the 2nd November 1863.[8]. It's now known as 22 Coghill Street, Kapunda, on the corner of Albert Street.
WE understand that Mr. Chamberlain, butcher, of Kapunda, has lost a horse in the following manner:—The horse got loose, and finding its way to the Goods Shed, partook freely of some wheat which was there accessible, and followed that up by drinking a quantity of water, when, as a natural result, the wheat swelled very much and caused the death of the animal.[9]
Alfred CHAMBERLAIN was admitted to hospital on the 29th September 1866 at the age of 55. He was recorded as married, Protestant, and a carpenter living in Kapunda. He was born in Norfolk, England, had been in South Australia for 12 years having arrived on the Star Queen.[10] He passed away on the 31-Oct-1866 in hospital at Adelaide at the age of 55. He was living at Kapunda at the time of his death.[11]
Research Notes
There was a marriage of an Alfred CHAMBERLAIN to Fanny ABBEY at St. Pancras, Middlesex, on the 4th September 1854. Alfred was given as the bachelor son of John Chamberlain and a carpenter. Fanny was given as the spinster daughter of William ABBEY. They are both living in New Hampstead Road and both their fathers were given as deceased.[12][13] This marriage is just before the Star Queen leaves on the 1st October 1854, and according to the manifest John is already 7 years old. There is uncertainty, therefore, as to whether this is the correct one.
