Birth and Parentage

Thomas Chamberlayne was the youngest son of Edward Chamberlayne, (1716), a clerk, of Great Cressingham, Norfolk, and his wife Elizabeth née de Grey, (1707-1752), daughter of Thomas de Grey of Merton. [1] He was born on 13 May 1743 and had two elder brothers,

  • George and
  • Edward

and two sisters,

  • Charlotte, (b.1741, m. 1779, Rev. William Hayward Roberts, (1734-1791), poet and clergyman, D.D. (Cantab )) and
  • Anne, (1748-1830) m. 1771, Benjamin Kennicott,( 1718-1783) biblical scholar, D.D. (Oxon) (1761) F.R.S. (1764) Canon of Christ Church, Oxford, (1770), and two older brothers, Edward and George. [2]

Life

Thomas became a scholar at Eton College, [3]and matriculated aged 18 at Kings, Cambridge on 26 January 1762. (Tripos: Cla. Math. in 1763). He attained his BA in 1788 and his MA in 1769, and subsequently became a Fellow of Kings in 1765.[3]

He was ordained as a deacon in Norwich on 19 June 1768, became a priest on 24 June 1768 in London, after which he was presented as Rector to the church of Gt. Cressingham with Bodney, Norfolk from 1768-92. [3]

He then moved to Worplesdon, Surrey, where he was Rector from 15 April 1791 until his death.[3] [4]


His other duties involved his being tutor to Lord Midleton.[3]

In 1772 he was elected as Fellow of Eton College, [5]and its Vice-Provost from 1791-1801.[6][3]

Marriage

On 14 September 1789 in St George, Bloomsbury, London[7]he married Catherine Tunstall, daughter of Rev. Dr Tunstall, [3] but their marriage lasted only a little over 12 years.

Death

He died in December 1801, aged 57, and a note in his burial record states that he was 'respected and beloved by all who knew him'.[8][4][3]

A Memorial in the chancel of St Mary's, Worplesdon commemorates him.[4]
