Birth and Parentage

[2]His middle name, Tankerville, refers to his lineage, as the family had long held that they descended from Guillaume de Tancarville. He was born at Witherley Hall, in Weddington, near Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England, on Dec 21 1881[3] He had three younger sisters, Mabel Alicia, Eirene Clare and Cicely Lavinia.

At the time of the 1891 census, he was 9 and paying a visit with his aunt and uncle, Anne and Donald Nicol in Marylebone, London. Anne (née Bates) was Edward's mother, Norah's older sister.

[9][10]

HIs father wrote to their family friend Sir Francis Newdegate, at the time, Governor of Western Australia:

Truly we are thankful that Edward has come safe through the war and much of his service has been with the Australians in Gallipoli & in Palestine. As to discipline among men and officers, none, but as comrades & as fighters, the best.
Excerpt from Letter from Stanes to Sir Francis Newdegate[11]

World War 2

As war was declared in 1939 and the UK register was taken, the Chamberlaynes were at home at The Elm, in Church Lane, Chipping Norton and Eskie's two sisters were staying with them.

1939 U.K. Register For Elm Church Lane , Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England :

After the war Edward served as a Brevet[12] Lieutenant-Colonel, in the Territorial Army, a Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire and, like his father Stanes, and grandfather, Henry, before him, as a Justice of the Peace. [13]

His home was in Oxfordshire at The Elm, Church Lane, Chipping Norton, one of the few gentleman's houses in Chipping Norton, not a stone's throw from the mound where Chipping Norton's motte and bailey castle, had been built by another ancestor, a 24x great grandfather of his; Ernulf de Hesdin. Had he known, and perhaps he did, he would have been tickled pink.

Death

He died aged 81 on 2 May 1963 and was buried at St Nicholas old chantry chapel churchyard, Heythrop, near Chipping Norton.[14]
