Biography

Silas was born on March 28, 1839 in Campbell County, Tennessee. He was the son of John Chambers and Margaret Sharp. He married Helen Marry Sharp on March 14, 1869 in Scott County, Tennessee. He passed away with chronic rheumatism on July 26, 1907 at Huntsville in Scott County.

Silas L. Chambers was a first sergeant in Company G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry. He was 22 years old at the time of his enlistment on November 4, 1861. He served until receiving an honorable discharge on November 5, 1864. He was promoted to 3rd sergeant on December 15, 1862, and was promoted to 1st sergeant on September 1, 1864. He was on detached duty guarding cattle from August l, 1863 to November 12, 1863 by order of General Shackelford. Born on March 28, 1839, Chambers was married to Helen Mary Sharp (1853-1942), the daughter of William ( Billy ) Sharp. The date of their marriage was March 14, 1869. She is buried in Knoxville, while her husband, who died in 1907, is buried in the Harness- Chambers Cemetery in Scott County. He has a military tombstone. The children of Silas L. and Helen Sharp Chambers were: William Sherman ( 1870-1884); Leodicea ( 1872- 1924); Margaret Elizabeth (1875-1896); Rosabelle (1877-1960); 1942); Maudilly (1883-2); Henry H. (1885-1886); Sidney M. (1887-1888); and Simon Sylvester (1889- 1947). At the time of the 1890 Civil War Veterans Census Chambers had a Huntsville post office address. He was suffering from chronic rheumatism and unable to work. At the age of 51, Chambers was mustered into the John Newport Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 93 in Huntsville. G.A.R. records show his birthplace as Campbell County and his current residence as Huntsville. His discharge was filed at the Scott County Register of Deeds Office in Huntsville on June 6, 1866, in Book F, page 8. This entry was compiled from information in the 1890 Civil War Veterans Census, abstracted from microfilm by Byron Sistlers and from other sources by Jennifer Reed Sexton, Williamsburg, KY; from "Descriptive Records.
