James was born in 1883. He is the son of Thomas Chambers and Maggie Coyle.
He was living in Manorcunningham at the time of his wedding to Mary McFadden of Keeldrum in 1903. In 1911 he and his young family are living in Grawky.
The family appear to have changed their name from Chambers to Shiels between 1901 and 1911; all sources from 1911 onwards are for Shiels (and its variants).
He passed away in 1977.
