Birth & Upbringing: Sir John was born in 1870. He was the son of Edward Chancellor and Ann Tod. [1][2]
Family: He married Mary Elizabeth Thompson [3]
Military Service: He served in the British Army Corps of Engineers. John retired with the Rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Occupation: Sir John was a Colonial Administrator serving as the Governor of Mauritius between 1911 and 1916 and then Trinadad and Tobago [4]
before being appointed the first Governor of Southern Rhodesia. [5] In 1928 he became the High Commissioner of the British Mandate of Palestine. He left Palestine in 1931 and returned to England where he took up the position of Chairman of the Livestock Commission.
Honours and Awards: He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1898 [6]and in 1909 he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. [7] In the 1913 King's birthday honours he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George [8], of which he became a Knight Grand Command (GCMG) in 1922. [9] In 1928 Sir John was appointed Knight of Justice in the Venerable Order of St. John. [10] [11]

Demise: He passed away, aged 82, in 1952. [12]
Burial: Quothquan Cemetery, Lanark, South Lanarkshire. [13]
