Note: A letter from Annamae Barber Chandler (received in April, 1994) states that Josiah was a fourth-generation American, born in Henry (Pittsylvania) County, Virginia. His father, Robert, was born in Henrico County, grew up in Cummberland (Goochland) County and took his family to North Carolina, and South Carolina before going to Tennessee. His grandparents were Joel and Priscilla Chandler who came from New Kent and probably was related to the Robert Chandler who left a will in York county in 1669. 2 Also, he was in Wilson County, Tennessee, buying land in 1812. 2 The following is from the book Discovering Chandler Lines 1475 - 1996 In Tennessee Death Records 1908 - 1944, by Annamae Barber Chandler: 2 Josiah Chandler was born 12 July, 1762, in Henry County, Virginia; he was 65 years old when he died, 16 October 1827 in Leeville, Wilson County, Tennessee. Josiah married at Fishes Creek in Wilkes County, North Carolina, 6 years after Robert moved his family there. Josiah was NOT born in England, nor did he come to America through Charleston, South Carolina, as an erroneous DAR record states. He was born in "Halifax", Virginia (later Henry), volunteered for North Carolina Continental Line under Col. Clevelands Company, served a tour under Captain Kees, against Indians in 1782, fought at the Battle of Ransom Mill and at Kings Mt. Four sons, Bailey, Eddins, Andrew and William, fought in the War of 1812. He moved his family south to Wattsville, Simmons Creek, Laurens, South Carolina, in about 1790. There her father sold 100 acres to Josiah for $200. Their big move was to Wilson County, Tennessee, about 1803, hopefully, when his 80-year-old parents, Robert and Partheny went riding off through the mountains. No record has been found of land in Robert's name or in Josiah's earlier than 1812. Josiah bought a half-section, 320 acres, from William Crabtree, 27 November 1812, for $720 on Cedar Lick Creek with James and Sally Henderson as witnesses. Josiah's boys bought land on both sides of the ridge from him, some on Pond Lick, and some on Cedar Lick Creeks. The key piece with the spring feeding both creeks was not sold until his son, Bailey, sold it to son, Andrew, after Josiah's death. One 100-acre piece of Josiah's property generated 5 deeds as it was sold from one person to another within the family. Josiah, John Poiner, James Somers, Zara Haralson, and Eddins were buying or selling it with the price varying from $60 to $500. Andrew, Josiah and his brother, Ryland were jurors at the courthouse in Lebanon in 1814, 1817, and 1822. 2 Notes for Josiah Chandler: According to a questionnaire filled out by Benjamin Duggan Rogers, Josiah was born in England and married Sallie Eddins in England. It said they came through Charleston, South Carolina in 1785 and moved on to Wilson County, Tennessee a little bit later on. 2 In the 1800 census, Josiah is listed as the head of household in Laurens County, South Carolina. 2 1800 Laurens County census. The following information is from the Genealogical Abstracts of Revolution War Pension Files, Volume I: A-E, abstracted by Virgil D. White, The National Historical Publishing Company, Waynesboro, Tennessee, 1990.: 2 Chandler, Josiah, Sarah, W159, North Carolina line, widow applied 4 April, 1839 in Wilson County, Tennessee. She was aged 75 being born 24 August 1762 in Culpeler County, Virginia, soldier was born 12 July, 1762 in Henry County, Virginia. Soldier and wife married 26 August, 1784. Soldier died 22 October, 1827 in Wilson County, Tennessee, family records, to wit; widow's father Abraham Eddins, born in Jun, 1724 and he died 26 August, 1805 and soldiers mother was born 27 November 1732, soldier's wife Sarah "Salley" (Eddens) was born 24 August, 1762. 2 2 Source: From a Chandler genealogy web site: 2 Josiah was a soldier in the American Revolution and when he applied to the government for a pension, he proved who his parents, wife and children were. Because Josiah had no printed proof of his service or his discharge, it was necessary to testify in detail to prove he had actually served. He stated that he entered the war in 1778 and fought under the commands of Captain Lenoir, Colonel Cleveland, and Captain Keys at the battles of Rainbow Mills, Kings Mountain and a shorter tour of service against the Indians in 1782. He wrote the names of his children and other family on papers that appear to be a grocery list or journal of sorts. He crossed out orders for coffee, salt, bacon, ribbon, a hat, fabric, powder, papers of pins, nails, and whiskey. Josiah named his siblings and their dates of birth and a few of their deaths. He listed his 16 children and their dates of birth. One page says "Salley Chandler (his wife) was born August 1762 and we was married 26th of August 1784" . "Robert Chandler (his father) was born the last day of August in the year of our lord 1720. Partheney Chandler his wife was born the 27 day of November in the year of our lord 1732 and daddy dyed August the 26 day of 1805". Josiah's wife was Sarah Eddins, and his sister Rebecca married William Eddins, our ancestors. Josiah also listed in his papers notes on his wife's parents "Abraham Eddins was born June __1724 and he died November the 30 day of 1801 and old Mary died the 22 day of July 1786" Josiah died October 22, 1827 and his wife petitioned to receive his pension of $20 per year. Testifying in her behalf were her brother *WILLIAM EDDINS and his wife *REBECCA CHANDLER EDDINS. Samples of the papers and transcriptions are included in this chapter.
