Biography

Charity Matilda Chandler was born in Georgia on February 22, 1839 to Ambrose Chandler and Jerusha White Chandler.

Charity's father, Ambrose Chandler, appeared on the 1840 census in Franklin County, Georgia. The household consisted of: 1 male under 5 years old , 2 males between 5 and 10 years old, 1 male between 10 and 15 years old, 1 male between 30 and 40 (Ambrose Chandler), 1 female under 5 years old, 1 female between 5 and 10 years old, 1 female between 10 and 15, 1 female between 30 and 40 years old (Jerusha Chandler). Charity would have been listed as a female under five on this census. [1]

On the 1850 Census, she was listed as a seven year old female living in Carroll County, Georgia with her parents and siblings. She was attending school, and her birthplace was Georgia.[2] [3]

She married Thomas Hiram King on December 29, 1854 in Carroll County, Georgia.[4]

On the 1860 Census, she was found living in the household of her husband, Thomas Hiram King, and two children. The census indicated that she was a housewife and was born in Georgia. According to the census, she could not read or write.[5]

On the 1870 Census, she was living in the household of her husband, six children, and her mother, Jerusha Chandler King. Charity worked as a housewife, and the census stated that she could not read or write. This census incorrectly listed her first name as Clarissa.[6]

On the 1880 Census, she was listed as a 42 year old, white female living in Carroll County, Georgia with her husband and children: Mary E. King, Joseph B. King, Martin A. King, Hiram B. King, John W. King, James D. King, and Robert S. King. Also in the household were her mother, Jerusha Chandler, and her husband's aunt, Matilda Brown. She was keeping house. According to the census, she could not read or write. She and her parents were born in Georgia.[7]
