Biography

Birth

Jonathan Niles Chandler was born on 24 May 1827 in New York.[1]

He was probably born in Cayuga County, New York.[1]

Jonathan left home at the age of 10. [2]

He tended Bethany College (Kansas? or West Virginia?) two years or longer. [2]

Along with his sister, Lucy, Jonathan taught at a select school [A select school is "a privately supported and administered elementary or secondary school whose student body is selectively chosen usually on a sectarian, social, or economic basis" from Merriam-Webster Dictionary] at Columbus Junction, Iowa. Later he taught at Brighton, Iowa. During his time at Brighton, he was also the pastor at the Church of Disciples.[2]

He graduated from Eclectic Medical Institute at Cincinnati,Ohio. He had a practice for 3 years in Enon, Ohio, followed by 11 years in Charlottesville, Indiana. [2]

Marriage and Children

Jonathan married Sarah H. Whitney on 26 November 1850. [3] Jonathan and Sarah had the following children:

  1. Ella, b. 9 September 1851, d. aged 16 months
  2. Edwin b. 19 April 1853 Iowa; d. 14 January 1913; m. Ella Swift
  3. George W. b. 20 November 1856 Ohio; m. 1) Mattie C. Updike 2) Anna Lewis
  4. Jesse M. 4 September 1862 [2]

In 1860, Dr. John N. Chandler and Sarah were living in Charlottesville, Jackson Township, Hancock, Indiana, United States with their two children, Edwin 6; George 3. Also living with them, was Jonathan's younger brother, George L. age 31.[4]

When he became deaf, he closed his practice and started farming near Perry, Iowa. [2]

In 1870, Jonathan and his family were living in Mt. Pleasant, New London Township, Henry County, Iowa.[5]

Death

Jonathan passed away on 9 December 1899 in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. He is buried in Block: 10 Section: SG Lot: 00052, Woodland Cemetery, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA.[6]
