Elizabeth Chandler was born 12 Nov 1844, in Illinois.[1] She was the eldest daughter of James and Mathilda (Savage) Chandler. Elizabeth had a twin brother, Erastus, who died at 10 months of age.
In 1850, Elizabeth was a five-year-old girl residing with her family in Grant County, Wisconsin. In 1860, at the age of just 15, she was working as a teacher at the common school at Cassville, in Grant County, Wisconsin.
Elizabeth married George Washington Farmer and had a daughter, Mary, who died 13 Apr 1866. [It is commonly stated that Mary died at age three, perhaps during a flu epidemic; this would place her date of birth as 1862 or 1863. It is also frequently claimed that Elizabeth and George were married 6 Mar 1864, in Atchison County, Missouri - well after Mary's suggested birth date. This later claim is suspect, however, as neither was from Missouri.]
Elizabeth and George had a second daughter, Katherine, whose specific date if bith is also unknown. Elizabeth died 23 Sep 1868, and it has been commonly asserted that she died giving birth to Katherine. There does not seem to be any direct evidence to support this claim, and there is actually evidence to suggest that Katherine was born as much as a year or more befire her mother's death.
Elizabeth was buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery near Hamburg. According to her tombstone, she was age 23 years, 10 months and 11 days.
