Biography

Caleb Chappell was born on October 7th, 1671 in New London, Connecticut to George Chappell and Margery Margaret Taylor, the former who immigrated to Colonial America from England in 1634/5.[1]
On June 4th, 1694, Caleb married Ruth Calkins Royce in Norwich, Connecticut. The Chappells moved to the newly created settlement of Lebanon, where their first child (Abigail) was born in April 1695.[1][2][3] The couple had a total of nine children born between 1695 and 1714 (the children are listed in the family-relationship section above).
On January 18th, 1708/9, Caleb sold half his deceased father's homestead to his brother George for "thirty good and merchantable sheep and a bond of obligation" that George would pay half of the costs of care for their aging mother.[4] The property and obligation was conveyed back to Caleb after his brother's death in 1712. Caleb sold the property to his nephew John Daniels that same day.[5]
Caleb and Ruth were God-fearing individuals and gained admittance to the First Congregational Church of Lebanon in 1704. Their religious participation, however, predated their admittance as evidenced by their son Joshua's baptism in 1702.[6]
Lieutenant Caleb Chappell died on March 23rd, 1732 in his native town of Lebanon at 62 years of age.[1] Ruth lived another 35 years before dying at the age of 98. They were both buried in Exeter Cemetery in Lebanon.[7][8]

Research Notes

  • Ellsworth, CT - A Caleb Chappell sold land in Ellsworth, CT to Phineas Hunt during the 1700s.[9]
  • Litchfield, CT - A Caleb Chappell was an original proprietor of Litchfield in 1719 but removed shortly thereafter. This could refer to Caleb or his son of the same name.[10]
  • Death - The Hale Collection of Connecticut Cemetery Inscriptions, compiled in 1934, lists Caleb's death year as 1732, and this date is corroborated by contemporaneous photographs of the headstone. Gale Ion Harris' seminal work on the Chappell family, however, lists his death year as 1733. This discrepancy likely reflects differences in dating conventions stemming from the transition from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar.[10]
