Elizabeth Chapin was born in 1823; in 1845, she married physician and writer Josiah Gilbert Holland, who became editor first of the Springfield Republican, and later of Scribner's Monthly. Through her husband, during his time at the Republican, Elizabeth met and became friends with poet Emily Dickinson. Elizabeth passed away in 1896.
