On 8 April, 1961, Roger married Sandra Lee Wallen in Moscow, Latah, Idaho, United States

and moved back to Pocatello,

so she could finish her degree, being closer to graduation than he. Following her graduation, they returned to Moscow, Idaho so that he could attend the University of Idaho and earn his degree in Engineering.

He passed away on 16 August 2008 at his home in San Diego, San Diego, California from Cancer.

A memorial service was held at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Poway, San Diego, California on Monday, August 25, 2008.[17]

"January 20, 1938 - August 16, 2008"
"George Roger Chapin was born January 20, 1938 in Pocatello, Idaho. His father, George Elliot Chapin did not care for the name George and beleived his youngest son was named Charles Roger until weeks later when his birth certificate came in the mail."
"Roger, as he was called, attended elementary through high school in Pocatello then went to Idaho State College (now Idaho State University). He transferred to University of Idaho so he could major in Electrical Engineering. There he met Sandra Wallen. They married in 1961 and had their first child, Colleen, two days before their first anniversary. While in College he worked for the Idaho State Highway District as an engineer aide. He was in the National Guard from 1960

until he received his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in 1966. Upon graduation, the family moved to Oxnard CA where he worked for the Naval Weapons System Center."
"Daughter number 2, Leslie, was born in 1967. Six months later they moved to Camarillo. Roger's third daughter, Michelle, joined th4e family in 1969. Roger received his Master of Science (MS) degree in Systems Managment from USC."
"He left civil service in 1979 and moved to Wichita Ks where he worked for Boeing."
"In 1984 the family moved back to Southern California where Roger worked for TRW in Rancho Bernardo for several years then transferred to TRW in Redondo Beach and then to TRW in Torrance."
"He drove his 1982 Volvo 205 miles roundtrip everyday and had well over half a million miles on it when he retired in 2001."
"He worked for BAE for a couple of years before retiring for the 2nd time.
In addition to his wife and three daughters Roger is survived by two son-in-laws Scott and Peter and six grandchildren: Connor, Noah, Katelyn, Luke, Logan, Alexa."
"Roger's Hobbies include: In the 1970's he was active in training and showing dogs in dog obediance. He taught classes in dog obediance. He loved to garden. Came home from the office and played in the dirt. He became interested in epiphyllums and started collecting. He had over 1200 hybrids. He was President and director of San Diego Epiphyllum Society. He was also chairman of the volunteer group that takes care of the Epi house at the Wild Animal Park."
