Leroy Chapin was born 13 June 1839 at Georgetown, Madison, New York the son of Levi Chapin and Harriet Perry .[1] He appeared on the 1850 United States Census at Georgetown in the household of his parents.
[2]
The family moved to Michigan prior to Levi's death in 1855. In 1860, Harriet and her children were living in Vernon Township, Shiawassee, Michigan where Leroy was listed as a member of her household on the 1860 United States Census.[3]
At Vernon on 30 August 1862, Leroy enlisted in Co. D of the 9th Michigan Infantry. He was discharged for disability 3 September 1863 at Detroit, Michigan.[4][5] In 1876, he applied for a veteran's pension.[6]
Leroy and his widowed cousin, Orrice Olivia (Perry) Melvin, married 14 December 1864 at Vernon.[7].
They were the parents of eight documented children: Elmina Jane (1865); Lewis Leroy (1867), Laura L (1868), Albert Levi (1870), Norman (1872), Oscar D (1874), Charles Wesley (1875) and Benjamin Harrison (1883). Another child, George, is listed in some unsourced family trees. His wife, Orrice, was the informant for Leroy's death record and that states that he was the father of eight children, seven of whom were living. On the 1900 Census, Orrice is listed as the mother of eight chidlren, six of whom are living. Two children have recorded deaths. Laura had died in 1871 at the age of two and Albert had died in 1900.[8][9] However, on the 1910 Census, Orrice is listed as the mother of nine children, six of whom are living.[10]
In 1870, the family resided in Vernon Township where Leroy appears on both the Population and Agricultural Censuses.[11][12] The 1875 Shiawassee County Atlas shows them owning 35 acres in Section 30 of Vernon Township.[13]
By the time of the 1880 Census, the family lived in Hazelton Township, Shiawassee.[14] Leroy also was listed on the 1890 Veteran's Census as residing in Hazelton Township.[15]
Leroy died at Hazelton Township on 20 April 1899 of Synscope, Chronic pericaiditis with ?. pulmonary and gastric trouble.[Doctor's handwritten entry is difficult to read.] .[1] He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, New Lothrop, Shiawassee, Michigan.[1][16]
