Joseph, son of Levi Chapin and Betsey Durfee, was born 19 September 1843, in Leon, New York.[1]

In the 1850 census Joseph (age 7) was in Waupun, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, United States.[2]

In the 1860 census Joseph (age 10) was in Wanpun, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, United States.[3]

In 1867, Joseph married Flora Hansen Morrison.
