In 1659 Japhet's grandfather Japhet Chapin and his great uncle Henry Chapin were the first settlers of Chicopee when they purchased land from John Pynchon.[3] "Sons and daughters were born to these brothers and in a few years there were eighty-seven grandchildren"[4] of which Japhet was one. Japhet's father Thomas was "one of the original grantees of the large tract of land which was granted to the officers and soldiers and their descendants in the Falls fight."[2]
Japhet's father Thomas received a large inheritance from his father Japhet in 1712.[5] Japhet had ten brothers and sisters named Thomas, Abel, Shem, Sarah, Nathaniel, Bathsheba, Jabez, Deborah, Martha and Esther. (Martha and Esther were twins.)[2][5]
On page 15 of the Annals of Chicopee Street: Records and Reminiscences of an Old New England Parish for a Period of Two Hundred Years by Clara Palmer there is a passage attributed to Japhet's mother Sarah Wright.
"Mrs. Thomas Chapin, a matron of those very early days, said that she had two sons who were too rich to be comfortable, Abel and Japhet; one, Thomas who was just about right as regarded property; and one Shem, who was too poor. This Mrs. Thomas was a very generous woman, and when reproved by some of her family for giving away eggs, replied, "The more I give away the better my hens will lay." Abel who she called too rich, was afterwards known as Landlord Abel." [4]
Japhet likely inherited a significant amount of land from his father Thomas (search of the will and probate records of Massachusetts for Thomas has not returned any records.) He had a considerable estate that was probated after his death in 1784.[6]
Marrige and Family
Japhet Chapin and Thankful Dickinson made their intention to marry on March 21, 1726[7] and they were married on May 26, 1726 by Samuel Partridge Esqr. from Hatfield.[8][2]
Japhet and Thankful had ten children born in Springfield:[6][2]:
Thankful was born February 22, 1727; she married Gardner Kellogg of Hadley[9]
Japhet was born March 14, 1729 and died in 1754 at the age of 25 years.[10]
Hapzibah was born March 25, 1731; she married John Miller of West Springfield[11]
Martha was born May 12, 1733; she married William Chapin of Chicopee[12]
Nathan was born February 3, 1735; he died in Buckland on February 13, 1830 at 96 years of age[13]
Rhoda was born April 19, 1737; she married John Day of West Springfield[14]
Simeon was born August 20, 1739 and died May 20, 1799 at the age of 60 years[15]
Chloe was born December 27, 1741 and died July 29, 1771[16]
Catharine was born January 22, 1745; she married Daniel Sexton of Somers[17]
Sarah was born January 14, 1747; she married Rev. Peletiah Chapin; resided in Windsor, Vermont.[18]
Thankful died on March 29, 1773 in Springfield, Massachusetts[19][20] and was buried in the
Chicopee Street Burying Ground.[21] After Thankful's death Japhet made an intention to marry Lydia Belding on October 28, 1778.[22]
Orange Chapin in his book, The Chapin Genealogy wrote of Japhet and Lydia:
"When Japhet was 82 and his wife Lydia was 80 years of age, they made a journey on horseback (on separate horses) from their residence on Chicopee street to Northfield. a distance of more than 40 miles in one day, and it is said they sat as erect upon their horses as young people. Japhet was a man of very punctual habits. For instance, if any visitors came to see him and had a team with them, after passing the usual salutations, he would inquire when they would leave ; they might appoint the time when they chose, and at the appointed hour, without any further conversation respecting it, their team was brought to the door in readiness lor them to start for home."[2]
Military Service
Japhet is listed as an officer in the Colonial Soldiers and Officers in New England. He served as Sargent in Capt. Joseph Kellogg's company in 1725 to 1726 in the Hampshire County Expedition.[23] and served as a Lieutenant in the French and Indian Wars in 1756.[24]
Death
Japhet Chapin died February 8, 1786 at the age of 89 years and was buried in the Chicopee Street Burying Ground.[2][25][26]
Will and Probate
Japhet's estate was probate in 1786 in Springfield, Massachusetts[6] His daughter Martha Chapin and her husband William Chapin (William is the grandson of Henry Chapin b. 1631 and the great nephew of Japhet) both died before Japhet leaving young children. Japhet provided for his grandchildren William, Japhet, Henry, Marth, Tabitha and Philena in his will.
