Martha was born in 1831 in Wrentham, Suffolk, England. She was the daughter of Edward Chaplin and his much younger wife Mary Chaplin. Source: to be confirmed.
In 1841 according to the 1841 England Census drawn up at that time, Martha was 8 years old and living with her parents in 26 Southwold Road, Wrentham, Suffolk. Her father was 60 years old and her mother 25. Martha's mother Mary was born on the S.S.Zebra in 1816. She was deaf and dumb. Edward Chaplin, Martha's father, was the ships carpenter at the time. He took the baby in and looked after her. When she was 17 he married her.
In 1851, according to the 1851 England Census drawn up at that time, Martha was 19 years old and living with her mother (32) in Wrentham still at 26 Southwold Road. Also living there was a lodger, Sarah Burgess who was 96 years old. Martha's father,Edward Chaplin, had died a year previously in 1850 leaving Mary a widow and Martha without a father.
Four years later in 1855, Martha was married to William Card on 24th December at Wrentham, Suffolk, England.Source: England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915.
The England Census for 1861 shows us Martha Card, at the age of 27, married to William Card (26) and living at 44 Chapel Lane, Lowestoft. With them are their children Matthew (6), Harriet (4). Martha's mother Mary (53) is shown as a visitor.
The England Census for 1871 shows us Martha Card, at the age of 40, married to William Card (36) and still living at 44 Chapel Lane, Lowestoft. With them are Martha's mother Mary, by then 65 years old and the children, Martha E. Card (16), Clara M. Card (9), Edner Card (8), Margaret Card(7), Emma Card (6), Edward W. Card (3) and Jessie E. Card (1).
The England Census for 1881 shows us Martha Card, at the age of 49, married to William Card (shoe and bootmaker) (46) and still living at 44 Chapel Lane, Lowestoft. With them are Martha's mother Mary (76), Emma Card (15), William Card (14), Jessie Card (11) and Lewis M. Spoor (Martha and William's grandson).
The England Census of 1891 shows us Martha Card at the age of 60, married to William Card (56) and living at 44 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. With them is Lewis Moses Spoor (16), their grandson - a bricklayer.
In 1897 Martha's husband William Card died on 4th October at Lowestoft.
The England Census of 1901 shows us Martha Card, widow, at the age of 71, living at 44 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. Living with her are her daughter Jessie Card (30) and her granddaughter Winnie (2).
The England Census of 1911 shows us Martha Card, widow, (79) staying with her daughter Mary Clara married to ? Burgess
Martha's death (age 91) was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1922 in the Mutford district, Suffolk.[1]
