Richard was born in 1736/7 in New London, Connecticut Colony.
Richard was a Lieutenant in the colonial forces under Col. Ledyard and was one of the soldiers killed 6 Sept. 1781 in the Battle of Groton Heights defending Fort Griswold against forces led by the traitor Benedict Arnold. [1][2]
His tombstone epitaph reads:
"In memory of Lieu. Richard Chapman who was killed at Fort Griswold Sep 6 1781, in the 45 year of his age. How suddenly death's arrow fly! They strike us & they pass not by, But hurl us to the Grave"
His wife was Esther Richards. Daughter Susan married Natl. Hempsted.
