Biography

Birth and Origins

Helen Watters Chapman was the daughter of John Wilgar Chapman and Ida Mary Cooper. She was born in 17 June 1897 in Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland[1]

Birth record: On 17 June 1897. Helen Watters Chapman at Government Tc , Ballymena to John Wilgar Chapman (bank clerk) and Ida Mary Chapman formerly Cooper.[2]

Early Life

In the 1901 Irish Census, the John W Chapman (aged 35, b. Antrim, Bank Manager) lived at house 285 in Ballyclare Town (Ballyclare, Antrim) with his wife, Ida M Chapman (26, b. Tipperary), their children, Helen Chapman (3, b Antrim, Scholar) and Dorothy Chapman (1, b Antrim) and a visitor, Ellen Watters (57, b. Kilkenny, unmarried, Ida's aunt), all CI, and a nurse & a general domestic servant (Roman Catholic).[3]

In the 1911 Irish Census, the John W Chapman (aged 45, b. Belfast, Bank Manager) lived at house 1 in Market Square (Ballyclare Urban, Antrim) with his wife, Ida M Chapman (36, b. Tipperary), their 3 daughters, Helen Chapman (13, b Antrim), Dorothy Chapman (11, b Antrim) and Isabel Chapman (6, b Antrim), a visitor, Frances Jacques (75, Ida's aunt or great-aunt), all CI, and two general domestic servants (Presbyterian).[4]

Marriage and Family

She married married Dr John French Craig 12 September,1922 at Kilbride Parish church

"Helen Watters 1897 (married Dr John Craig 1922); Dorothy Eliza Frances 1899 (died 1911); John Wilgar 1901; Ida Mary Isobel 1904."[5]

"Craig—Chapman—September 12, 1922, at Kilbride. Parish Church, by the Rev. S. T. Nesbitt, assisted by Rev. P. E. Major, Rev. W. J. Cunie, and Rev. H. Jamison—John French, son of the late John Craig, late of Napier, N.Z. and Mrs. Craig, Queen's Parade, Bangor, County Down, to Helen Watters, elder daughter of John Wilgar Chapman, Northern Bank, Ballyclare."[6]

Death

She passed away after 1922.
