He was born on 14 Sep 1842 in Bloomfield, Edgar County, Illinois, USA and his parents were Ruth (Hurst) and Robert C. Chapman, Jr. (1821-1897).

He enlisted on 18 Feb 1862 in Illinois, USA and served in the 38th Illinois Infantry during the American Civil War. He mustered out of the military on 20 Mar 1866 at Victoria, Texas, USA. ^{[1] [2] [3] [4]}

Thomas Smith Chapman married on 29 Mar 1868 in Illinois, USA to Marinda Catherine Roberts ^{[5] [6]} (1852-1928).

By 1900 he had moved to Oklahoma, USA.

He died on 03 May 1905 in Spencer, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, USA and was buried there at Kolb Cemetery. ^[7]
