Biography

Flag of Bedfordshire (adopted 2014)
Mary (Chapman) Mayes was born in Bedfordshire, England.

It is possible that this person is a conflation. There are some inconsistencies -

Baptism at Wootton when her siblings were baptised at Ridgmont
The marriage at Odell (18miles north of Ridgmont and 16miles northwest of Haynes) which does not fit with Mary coming from Ridgmont and the children being born in Haynes (sometimes called Hawnes)

Mary was baptised at Wooton on 2 Septmeber 1787. She was the fourteenth of fifteen children of William Chapman and Ann Parker. [1]

Mary married Thomas Mayes at Odell by licence issued on 10 February 1809. [2] The wedding took place the next day. [3] There were nine children from the marriage :-

Ann (Mays) Parson - Haynes 1809
Susanna (Mayes) Randall - Hawnes 1815
Elizabeth (Mayes) Cowland - Hawnes 1815
Sarah (Mayes) Cherry - Haynes 1816
William Chapman Mayes - Hawnes 1819
John Mays - Haynes 1821
Mary Ann Mayes - Haynes 1823
Isaac Mayes - Hawnes 1827
Thomas Mays - Haynes 1832

At the 1841 census Mary (53) Thomas (50), a labourer, William (22) John (20) Mary (18) Issac (16?) and Thomas (8) are living at Northwood End, Hawnes. [4] At the 1851 census Mary (64) and Thomas (63) a pauper are still living at Northwood End, Hawnes. So John (30) and agricultural labourer and lodgers John Evans, his wife Ann and daughters Betsy (11) and Salome (5) are also in the house. All the Evans family are working including the children. [5]

Mary was buried at St Mary's Church Haynes on 25 January 1854 aged 66. [6] [7]
